By 86 the 11/780 and 11/750 were dodos with the 8600/8650 out and the 11/785 replacing the 11/780 and most 11/780's getting upgraded in the field to 11/780-5's. The MicroVaxII's took the 11/750's place and the place of a lot of 11/780's -- since they were about .9 of an 11/780 and two of them took a lot less of the power and airconditioning in a room. The only reason 11/780's and 11/785's and 11/750's existed was in cluster formations -- since the MicroVaxII's didn't have a CI interface at the time. If DEC did one for QBUS there would have been only 86xx's and MicroVax systems left. There was an amazing potential for $$$ when DEC decided not to OEM the MicrovaxII KA620 board to box builders like they did the PDP11. That, REALLY REALLY was the beginning of the end for DEC.
